Abraham Martinez Hernandez (apeabe) was born in Oaxaca, Mexico.
His first encounter with music was in Washington DC when he was introduced to Internationally-known cellist and composer Tanya Anisimova, pushing him to take up the cello, an instrument he began to play at the age of 7. After moving to Costa Rica with his family he enrolled in the National Costa Rican Conservatory being part of the national youth orchestra, it was here that he developed his affinity for music creation having taken classes in musical composition, analysis and counterpoint.
He then moved to Mexico City, where he continued his education at the National Conservatory only being here for a couple of years before moving to Cholula, Puebla where he enrolled at the UDLAP to study International Law. Realising that perhaps law was not the best career path for him he switched to multicultural studies with no success, he then moved to music, his true calling.
It was later in life during his music training that he began to explore the world of electronic music, he fell in love with the electronic, more synthetic part of music creation, and was drawn to the art of dj. This idea turned quickly into a concept, a way to experience electronic music in different ways.
Inspired by some of the greatest, Apeabe at 26 years of age, tries to bring something different in the way he expresses himself through the turntables and when in the studio. He began late in life (in comparison to todays age ratio of young producers/djs) but quickly got hooked on the endless possibilities that this art possesses specifically on the digital part of being a dj, used as a tool that allows you to be more creative and with the help of modern DAWs the possibilities are endless. However, a true understanding and control of analog hardware is vital in todays cultural industry.
As a producer he is young yet eager to perfect his own sound. After only a 3 years he's had 8 releases. -for grino (AKA apeabe click here)
His introduction EP The Madcap Diary featuring an excellent track: Lucky Strike (Original Mix) this was the first release, along with the creation of his label; apeabe productions as his platform. The second EP called Psithurism (which means the whisper of the wind in the trees) while it did not generate the same buzz as the introduction EP was also well received and had truly two amazing tracks: Tamarindo (Original Mix) and Chinatown (Original Mix) both tracks showed a new sound and approach from apeabe, tightening his sound and not afraid to explore more melodic soundscapes.
Urdu EP presented a collaboration between apeabe and grino, apeabe wanted to mix these two artist into one EP helping him understand what his true sound really was. The sound was "un-clear" the small release was worked on during the summer of 2012 to really great disappointment as it did not fulfil either of the artist expectations. Soon after Apeabe Productions released its first EP with members not belonging to the apeabe family: Kontrol EP by Kachas. This EP featured artist from latin america, like Stripsounds, Hugo Ibarra & Kachas.
For release #006, apeabe went back to the studio this time with a need to clear up the sound. Using more analog sounds mixed with a bit of minimal grooves Down Grown EP was born. This EP was the sound of a more mature producer, learning new ways to use the sounds we record, twisting them to fit the grooves of each song.
Apeabe focused himself on reviving his original sound from his first EP and resulted in interesting tracks that showed a new face and perhaps new approach to sound design. Most notably Red Xar, a track that was featured in Techno Trip Unbridled a compilation done by Iplug Logo Label and was reminiscent of vintage sounds created a solid and crisp sound for apeabe.
This past 2013 apeabe had only one release under his own label titled Apealistic which generated great support from artist like Richie Hawtin, Pierce, Nudisco, and SLAM to name a few. This EP was released and marked the end of the release program from apeabe productions the "label". Currently apeabe is in the studio preparing what hopes to be something new and innovating. Pushing the boundaries and having fun while doing ti. As he finishes his studies in Barcelona, and more time is available for development, apeabe hopes that everything he has learned, experiences he's enjoyed, moments he's shared will all come together in shaping a unique sound. Having the opportunity to work on SSL consoles and have Neve hardware available as well as enthusiasm we hope this 2014 will bring more light to this artist.
As a dj apeabe has had a love of mixing, not following a specific category or- genre. He began with the creation of his ape-tech series. A collection of dj sets. Originally thought to be a new genre where apeabe was to make his world entrance and debut, but was quickly thrown out and used as the name for what would become a series. Apetech is a series of dj sets that began back in the day (2009) and as apeabe progressed so did the idea. The first of these was a set created to aid apeabe during a hard time break up period and was called Forgetting Irtmid Siragluov which to most was a really great introduction set, it generated buzz and is now available to download/ stream on our Mixcloud Apetech series section.
As for apeabe productions, we are growing each year gaining new experience and making new connections. The next stop for this primate label will depend on apeabe's crazy ideas. He has began to explore the possibility of moving to south east asia where he could settle for a few years. Apeabe has family in Jakarta, Indonesia and on several trips to the capital as well as Bali and Sumatra he began to fall in love with this country, while also allowing him close contact to the increasing asia industry.
Currently working for the leading industry booking agency: The Bullitt Agency.
